In one line

Athletes secure a 10-year Golden Visa via a General Sports Authority / sports-council recommendation, a UAE sports contract, or a qualifying investment (~AED 2m)no sponsor, family included, and tolerant of time abroad.

For an athlete, residency needs to do two things ordinary visas don't: survive a schedule spent abroad, and not tie you to a single employer. The Golden Visa does both. Here's how sportspeople get one.

The three routes

  • Sports-council recommendation — an endorsement from the General Sports Authority or a UAE sports council, based on the athlete's achievements, ranking and standing. This is the classic talent route.
  • UAE sports contract — a professional contract with a UAE club or sports entity can support residence.
  • Qualifying investment — a permitted investment (commonly around AED 2 million in property or an approved vehicle) opens the investor route, independent of sporting status.

Many athletes qualify on the talent route; where the record isn't yet there, the contract or investment routes provide alternatives, with an upgrade later. It sits alongside the wider long-term options in Golden Visa pathways.

Why it fits an athlete's life

  • 10 years, no sponsor — stability that isn't tied to a club or contract.
  • Tolerant of travel — it doesn't lapse because you're away competing for months (see residency flexibility).
  • Family included — sponsor spouse, children and, subject to conditions, parents.
Beyond active players. The talent framework can reach distinguished figures in sport, and coaches, executives and other qualifying professionals may have their own routes — so retirement doesn't automatically close the door. Each case is worth assessing.

Visa vs tax residence — keep them separate

A crucial distinction: the Golden Visa gives you the right to live in the UAE; it does not, by itself, make you UAE tax resident. The zero-tax treatment of salary, endorsements and image rights follows genuine tax residence — days present, a home, and a centre of interests — evidenced by a Tax Residency Certificate. Athletes chasing the tax benefit must establish residence deliberately, as we set out in moving to Dubai as an athlete.

How we help

Neo Legal builds and runs athlete Golden Visa applications: the route selection, the sports-authority recommendation or contract/investment evidence, the family sponsorships, and the tax-residence and image-rights structuring around it — one coordinated relocation. Part of our Sports practice.
